A Spectacular Life

by Kareen King on March 5, 2010

I just tuned into the news on The Today show in time to experience a heart-wrenching tribute to a young girl, Chelsea King, whose 18-year-old life was tragically taken just short of her pursuit of a life-time of learning and adventure. As typical of any television news coverage, a multitude of topics must be covered in a short amount of time. And thus, the unnatural segues such as viewed this morning. So, imagine just having participated in an emotional and tearful exchange about extraordinary love and loss which closes with these words to the grieving parents:
“Congratulations for having a spectacular, spectacular girl. And now, let’s take a check at the weather.”

Even in the nursing home setting, “the show must go on” shortly after the death of a resident. But how wonderful it is when memorials are held to pay tribute to those who have led “spectacular, spectacular” lives.

Life is a tragicomedy. In one moment, we are gripped with loss and pain. And the next, we’re concerned about the forecast. But for today, let’s press on to live “spectacularly.”
