This morning I caught a disturbing story aired on NBC’s The Today Show. According to research, we are “hard-wired to look away.”
Sadly, I have actually seen this type of scenario on rare occasions in the nursing home setting. For example, a resident might repeatedly call for help as nearby caregivers continue about their business, appearing to ignore the plight of the resident. It may be a less extreme version of the Bystander effect.
So, today, let us be consider “rewiring” ourselves to practice The Golden Rule and reach out as Good Samaritans to those in need.
