Mary Maxwell: Off-the-Cuff Wit

by Kareen King on October 7, 2011

Mary Maxwell, comedic YouTube Sensation, plays along with Emilou.

I just returned from presenting my “Finding Emilou” plenary concert at the Illinois Pioneer Coalition Summit in Springfield, Illinois. What a wonderful conference and an enthusiastic (standing ovation) reception to Emilou’s story. I met a lot of wonderful, talented caregivers and providers who are champions of Culture Change, the movement which promotes person-centered/person-directed care in long-term care communities.

On the last day, I found myself sitting next to the Youtube sensation, Mary Maxwell, at the dinner table before her endnote. I observed her sit quietly with notes in her lap while the surrounding constituents finished their desserts and wrapped up their conversations.

I couldn’t resist asking her to pose with my Emilou puppet, which she graciously accommodated.

“She has my teeth,” Mary quipped. “Literally.”

A few minutes later, I initiated yet another interaction.

“Are you nervous, or is this just a piece of cake?” I probed.

“I’m always nervous and I (glancing at her empty dessert plate) had a piece of cake,” she quipped without missing a beat.

The lady is a genius.
