Mefistofele

Today marks the anniversary of the 1868 premiere performance of Arrigo Boito’s opera, Mefistofele. It is based on the famous Faust Legend, Faust being a character who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge. Thus the origin of the phrase, “making a deal with the devil.”
