Just met a wonderful Ulyssean adult – Mona Magee, a master storyteller who is gracing the lives of interested listeners in Topeka, Kansas and the surrounding area. Mona, who is 78 years young, encourages seniors to preserve their life stories by writing them down.
“The whole goal of my life is to leave stories for my children,” Mona declares as she talks about being in a writer’s group to learn and have other people critique her work.
“Those stories will be lost if you don’t write them down,” she challenges a group of seniors.
She learned, during her past work with 12-step programs, that people find healing through the hearing of others’ stories.
Mona, donned in a floor length purple dress, announces to her audience, “When I am old, I will wear purple with a red hat.”
She credits author Sandra Martz as providing inspiration for some of her stories. Martz is the author of “When I Am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple” and “Grow Old With Me: The Rest is Yet to Be,” among others.
