There’s Gold in Them Thar Internet Hills

by Kareen King on July 28, 2010

I read a couple of articles today on the internet worth noting. The first came through my e-mail which was Richard Taylor’s newsletter, “From the Inside Out.” Richard, a PhD, is a person who lives with symptoms of dementia who states, “If you only know one person with dementia, you know only one person with dementia.”

I appreciate his reminder to not make generalizations about all individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. I recommend his newsletter as it has valuable insights from the perspective of one who lives with this challenging set of limitations. Richard’s monthly newsletter is available at http://www.richardtaylorphd.com/.

The other was an excellent New York Times article entitled,”One Way to Judge a Nursing Home” by Dale Russakoff. Click http://newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/one-way-to-judge-a-nursing-home/ for the full article, but you better act quickly! NYT articles tend to only be available to the general public for about a week after publication.

The important golden nugget from this article was the importance of investigating the nurse aide turnover rate and/or the the accessibility of personally interviewing the nurse aides in the long-term care community under consideration.
